Kid Cudi

It’s simply put, awesome that Kid Cudi has had so much mainstream success.  With Soulja Boy and other cardboard cut out gangster rapper clones out there it’s refreshing to see something lyrically and musically looking to evolve the genre.

He reminds me of a cross between Kanye (without the ego) and K-OS.  His style is like a hybrid rapping almost singing but not quite.  It’s tough to explain.  Lyrically he pours his heart into his songs.  No macho posturing and bragging about money and cars or sappy R&B love songs.  Everything comes from the heart, and that counts for a lot.

Musically the beats he chooses are very diverse and unique.  He’s got Ratatat and MGMT on one track.  That right there should tell you that he’s going for a new sound in Hip Hop.  I’ll leave you with one of my favorite verses from his song “The Prayer”.

My heart thump not from being nervous Sometimes I’m thinking God made me special here on purpose So all the while ‘til I’m gone make my words important so If I slip away, if I die today the last thing you remember won’t Be about some apple bottom jeans with the boots with the fur Baby how I dream of being free since my birth Cursed but the demons I confronted would disperse Have you ever heard of some shit so real Beyond from the heart, from the soul you can feel ”
